When I wake up in the morning, love
And the sunlight hurts my eyes
And something without warning, love
Bears heavy on my mind.
This is how Bill Withers begins the song Lovely Day. He mentions that the sun is hurting his eyes, then he mentions that there is something heavy on his mind.
Yesterday was one of the days my eyes hurt watching the events play out at our nation’s capital. The pain hurt, and the division was weighing heavy on my mind.
It is natural to settle into a loop and repeat the events from the day in my head. The next part of the loop is to be upset with those who acted that way, followed by increasing anger, and then I am critical. Again I am getting more and more upset.
I noticed today when I was listening to the song that this was a shared feeling- Bill sang these verses-
When the day that lies ahead of me
Seems impossible to face
And when someone else instead of me.
Always seems to know the way.
This morning, the day seems impossible to face, it is tempting to just watch the news, scroll social media, get mad, get upset, but then there is a third way. Which Bill sings about in the chorus-
Then I look at you
And the world’s alright with me.
Just one look at you
And I know it’s gonna be
A lovely day
I can’t change what happened in Washington, but I can find something to look at the confirms that the world is alright with me. When I do that, I know that it is going to be a lovely day.
Have a listen to Lovely Day by Bill Withers- What can you look at today? What can help you see that all can be right with you?
