50,000 Words!

This past Sunday, I went over 50,000 words and finished National Novel Writing Month.
It was a great feeling to be done. This year I enjoyed writing more than usual and finished faster than I had in previous years. I believe that these components helped me.

1Writing in short 10-15 minute sprints throughout the day.
2. Attending Virtual Write-ins with other people.
3. Showing up each day.

Now what?
Now I publish my story. Not the story I just wrote, but the story I wrote last year. This is the sixth time that I have finished NANO, last year I told myself that I needed to publish a book. Last year I wrote a story in NaNO, and I worked to get it ready to publish on Kindle. During November, I wrote my current Nano story while also preparing to publish the story I wrote last year. I have been in a writing workshop that has been aiding me. So the first week of the month, I meet with a group, and we did some peer editing of our work, then I hired an editor for the story. Each year I make New Year’s Resolutions and I make a point to work on them throughout the year and make a promise not to give up. Over the years I have discovered that when I make fewer resolutions I am able to work on them the entire year. Getting the book published has been one of the goals I set back in January and now it is coming closer to fruition. I am learning to compliment myself more on my effort. My bad habit is to tell myself I am not working hard enough, that I am not doing enough, and that it can always be better. After a while that type of self-talk helps me to be productive, but the cost is joy in using your talents. My hope and desire are that my gifts and talents and efforts can benefit others.

Right now, I have a goal of getting the draft to the editor by Dec. 5th, with the hope of putting it on the Kindle Platform by the end of this current year. So my plan for the future is this. Write a book in November, edit and rewrite the next year, publish the book, write a new book in Nano, and repeat for as long as possible.

This is the freedom of being an Independent Creator. I am not waiting to get picked. Instead, I am creating and putting it out into the world, then working to build an audience of people who will enjoy the story.

Head over to Tiktok and search @Aquafunkapus to meet my main character. Keep watching this space. In the coming weeks, I will be interviewing characters from the story and providing information on ordering the book and giveaways!

  1. Steven, it is so cool to see all of your creative endeavours coming to fruition. I can’t wait to see the book from last year’s NaNoWriMo be published and am so pleased to see that you wrote 50,000 words again this year.
I love the message in this about picking yourself and how by sharing some of what works for you, you will be an inspiration for others to do the same. [insert clapping and cheering]

  2. Congratulations Steven. I’ve not managed to succeed at NaNoWriMo yet (I’ve tried twice). I take inspiration from your success and I look forward to reading your novel when it is released.
